Christmas special - Maritime accidents
Join us for this special Christmas event, giving very insightful knowledge to maritime accidents.
Marine accidents and incidents can happen at any time. They are rarely caused by a single event, but instead usually trigged by several factors that could be totally unrelated, often occurring over a lengthy period due to failure of safety barriers and risk prevention measures in place.
The maritime industry, and not only in Denmark, has a long-standing tradition making use of the insights and lessons learned from the comprehensive reports issued by the national Marine Accident Investigation Board, following the most serious cases.
During the event we will delve deeper into the complex subject, before the traditional Christmas “æbleskiver” being served.

Handling of new fuels in ports - bunkering, safety, and infrastructure
Harbours are infrastructural hubs and play an important part in the green transition, with functions for both storage, and transportation, and large offtake of fuels.
The development and use of greener fuel technologies is well underway, but not without its challenges – join us for a talk about these challenges, as well
as the green development opportunities, that Danish harbours will face in the near future.
CCUS at Sea: Capturing and Transporting CO2
The EU aims to abate 50 million tons of CO2 by 2030. The International Energy Forum (IEF) estimates that 5.6 gigatons of CO2 must be captured by 2050. This monumental task requires the maritime industry to do its part. Join us for an evening where we will look at the role of the maritime industry in regards to CCUS – Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage. We will dive deep into OCC, onboard carbon capture as well as examining the latest developments within transport of CO2 in connection to CCUS.

ESG reporting and new EU regulations for shipping
During this meeting we will look into ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) reporting for shipping companies. Including how operational data is becoming more and more important for company wide reporting about fuel consumption and emissions.
Unmanned and Unstoppable: A Future of Autonomous Shipping
As the wave of digitalisation and automation sweeps across the maritime sector, the development of fully or partly autonomous ships is no longer a distant dream, but a promising reality. This transformation presents not only exciting opportunities but also complex challenges concerning safety, security, sustainability, and legal frameworks.
Alternative fuels - experiences and opinions
Developments within alternative fuels are rapid as well as experiences with actual operations are increasing.
Christmas Special: Hans Otto - a lifelong commitment to ships [Note: Presentation will be in Danish] + DSNAME Honrary Award Ceremony
Hans Otto Holmegaard Kristensen – or often just referred to as “Hans Otto” – is a well-known person not only within the Danish shipping community but also abroad. Hans Otto has been engaged in Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering for 40 years before he decided to step down in 2022 after having been involved in organizing abt. 450 meetings throughout the years.
Offshore Wind Spatial Planning
The Danish government has adopted an expansion of the Danish wind capacity with 4 GW by end of this decade. This is 4 times the existing capacity. In terms of regulatory approval, what is needed to proceed into this venture?
Offshore wind farms are large construction projects with many stakeholders including regulators, users, designers and marine life. This raises questions such as:
How is navigational safety ensured?
What will future traffic patterns look like considering large offshore installations?
How is marine life affected/secured?
FIRE!
Fire at sea is a hot topic - especially now with both the use of battery power for propulsion and with the carriage of batteries at sea, as the emerging risk of a battery fire is becoming an increasing concern for the maritime community.
The potential danger which lithium-ion batteries can pose, whether inside electric vehicles or transported as standalone cargoes, including the risk of a battery fire if they are not handled, stored or transported correctly being a very relevant hazard.
The above challenges plus many others have been considered in the recently published reports of DBI’s ELBAS (Electric Vehicle Fires at Sea) and the CARGOSAFE study (addressing how to develop new proposals to reduce the risk of fires on container ships) carried out by DBI. Regulators are also working on new guidance and recommendations for best practices in the area.
Come and hear about the conclusion and recommendations of ELBAS and CARGOSAFE as well as hear latest developments in battery fire safety in maritime industry and gain insight into this challenging area.
Maritime Training of the Future
Join us for an exciting, dynamic and interactive event where the latest trends within maritime training will be presented and discussed.
The presentations will include simulator and VR based long distance training solutions, how state-of-the-art E-learning and competence assessment goes hand-in-hand with implementation of remote-piloting solutions and finally we will hear about the brand new Bachelor in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering education
Sustainability, Recycling and Circular Economy
Ship recycling is a topic of increasing relevance in the maritime industry, as the global shipping industry continues to expand, while the impacts of change-over to newer and more efficient ship designs become more and more relevant.
The IMO legally binding framework, the Hong Kong International Convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships (Hong Kong Convention) is soon coming into force, it will require ships to verify their inventory of hazardous materials onboard. Also, the ship recycling yards will be required to provide a Ship Recycling Plan, to specify the way each individual ship will be recycled, depending on its particulars and its inventory.
Recycling of ships is by far the most environmental-friendly and economically sound way of getting rid of end-of-life ships, as becoming a sustainable source of materials for new production.
The session will have insightful presentations, providing a comprehensive overview of the ins and outs of ship recycling.
Alternative Fuels - a Reality
Alternative Fuels is becoming a reality. How do how we deal with some of the hands-on issues coming up rapidly?
Addressing the hands-on issues related to the adoption of alternative fuels in ships requires a multi-faceted approach involving infrastructure development, technological adaptation, safety measures, regulatory compliance, research and development, economic considerations and collaborative efforts. By addressing these challenges collectively, the maritime industry can better successfully navigate the transition toward greener and more sustainable shipping practices.

Digitalisation and operational optimisation
During this meeting we will look into digitalisation and how this can be used for operational optimization and energy optimization onboard ships. The focus will be on operational experience and how to utilize data from different systems in order to create enhanced benefits of the data onboard and ashore.
Wind assisted propulsion
The interest in wind assisted propulsion has taken up as a response to the intention to decarbonisation the shipping industry and pilot plants are sailing and underway.
CO2 - Seaborne transport

Status of the development of green ferries
More and more ferries on short routes in Denmark will in the coming years become “green ferries” as they will be powered by alternative energy supplies. Mainly electricity from wind and solar power plants, but perhaps also e-methanol in 2 – 3 years. Many new aspects of these technologies will be highlighted at this event, especially the huge topic of transfer of electricity from shore power connections to the ferries.

New energy sources – nuclear insights and debate - Part of Danish Maritime Days 2022
There is a growing understanding of nuclear power’s role in global decarbonization, as new technology is developed, which is fundamentally different from what exists today. Nuclear could be transforming into an inexpensive, sustainable and safe technology that can out-compete fossil fuels and revolutionize the shipping industry. But are there still issues, prejudices and dangers to be considered?
